Top 10 Gold Stocks For 2017

2016 was a surprising year…   It was the eighth year of this bull market. But that didn't slow things down.   U.S. stocks jumped 12%. Oil prices soared by 45%. And gold had a wild ride, eventually ending the year up 9%.   With all that happening, you might have missed the major boom that happened in our neighbor to the north… Canada.   Canadian stocks had a fantastic 2016… rising 22%. But history says that boom has gotten out of hand. Double-digit losses are likely this year. And that means now is time to bet against one of 2016's big winners.   Let me explain…   Canadian stocks were a stealth winner last year. The iShares MSCI Canada Fund (EWC) went up 22%… And it soared an incredible 40% from its January low to the end of 2016.   The problem is that Canada's stock market is now incredibly overbought… And that means lower prices are likely.

Top 10 Gold Stocks For 2017: Coherus BioSciences, Inc.(CHRS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Today,Coherus BioSciences (CHRS) lost a patent case with AbbVie (ABBV) that would have allowed for a generic version of Humira. Citigroup’s Andrew Baum and Peter Verdult have the details:

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

The Patent Trial and Appeal Boardjust announced that CHRSs IPR on the 166 Humira formulation patent was not instituted. We remind investors that Amgens IPR on the same 157 and 158 formulation patents were also not instituted. Any at risk launch on a formulation that potentially infringes 166, 157 or 158 would seem unlikely and carries a high risk thatAbbVie would attain a preliminary injunction. It is not clear whether either company could attempt launch with a formulation that does not infringe the patent estate. We note that Sandoz has uniquely not filed any IPR on any biosimilars. Sandoz has not announced the FDA has accepted their filing for their biosimilar adalimumab…We anticipate that the perceived historic relationship of the immunogenicity of Humira as it relates to dose stretching will form a key debate in the ongoing PTAB case…

Following the decision of the PTAB not to institute CHRS IPR on the 166 Humira formulation patent, we continue to anticipate that first likely launch of biosimilar adalimumab (Humira) in the US will be delayed until 2020, in line with our published forecasts and biosimilar model. We anticipate the open IPR hearings for the 135 dosing patent on Humira (filed by Boehringer and Coherus) to begin in Feb 2017 with the ruling in May. We rateAbbVie a Buy. We continue to prefer BUY rated Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY), Eli Lilly (LLY) among the US names.

Shares of AbbVie have climbed 5.6% to $59.18 at 3:05 p.m. today, while Coherus BioSciences has tumbled 11% to $25.18,Bristol-Myers Squibb has gained 3% to $52.56, andEli Lilly has risen 1.7% to $73.70.

Top 10 Gold Stocks For 2017: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

    The Bad

Bonds behaved poorly. The 10 year and long bond rose by between 3-4 basis points in yield. I bought a trading position in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond ETF (TLT) in front of a possible yearend pension rebalance. Big pharma stinks up the joint, again. Spec biotech is weakening again (Portola Pharmaceuticals PTLA, ACADIA Pharmaceuticals ACAD, etc.) Retail cant get out of its way. I am long JC Penney (JCP) and have trading positions in Kohl’s (KSS) and Macy’s (M) . (Nike (NKE) , Nordstrom (JWN) , Lowe’s (LOW) are downside features).

    The Ugly

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

After several years of being a Wall Street darling, Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) has fallen out of favor since 2015 as it has been hit by some of the same negative trends that have hurt the department store sector as a whole.

  • [By Douglas A. McIntyre]

The mall was created by accident, in some ways. Downtown Bloomington, Minnesota, lost its two largest corporate residents in 1982, football’s Minnesota Vikings and baseball’s Minnesota Twins. Over 78 acres became available for development. After debates about what should happen to the land, local officials decided to give it to financiers who wanted to build America’s largest home for retailers. It opened in 1992, two years before Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) was founded. Early tenants included Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M), the Sears division of Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) and Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN). All three have been injured by the current downturn in traditional retail sales.

L Brands surged 11% to $47.85 today, while the S&P 500 rose 0.2% to2,357.49. And while L Brands was the best performer, retailers made up half of the 10 best performing stocks in the benchmark today: Nordstrom (JWN) advanced 2.9% to $44.71, Gap (GPS) jumped 5.1% to $24.06, Kohl’s (KSS) climbed 5.6% to $39.60, andBed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), which reported earnings last night, gained 3.4% to $39.08.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The retail industry has gone through tough times lately, and things have been especially difficult for high-end retailers like Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN). As shoppers become more comfortable with online shopping, department stores with substantial brick-and-mortar assets have had to adapt to changes in consumer behavior and meet them on their own terms, and that’s been a difficult proposition for a company that prides itself on one-on-one customer service in the store setting.

Although Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) reported some successes in bringing fuel-cell solutions to customers in 2016, the company’s stock certainly didn’t reflect it — ending the year down more than 40%. Remaining ever-optimistic, though, management is far from short on expectations for the coming year. But whether Wall Street appreciates the successes and sends the stock back north is a different story.

Top 10 Gold Stocks For 2017: Canadian Solar Inc.(CSIQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Here are a few more notable items from the week.

First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) completed 18 MW of solar farms in Thailand with Prime Road Group. This is a module supply agreement from First Solar and is an example of the strategy it’s moving to in the long term. Look for more projects in which the company supplies equipment but a third party does construction and owns the project. Speaking of supply agreements, First Solar signed a 140 MW module supply agreement in Australia this week. The project will begin construction in April, so this will be a source of revenue for First Solar this year. Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) sold three utility-scale solar projects totaling 59.8 MW to Fengate Real Asset Investments this week for $195.3 million. This helps monetize assets on the balance sheet, reducing risk for the business in 2017.

That’s all for this week in solar. Earnings season in the industry starts next week, so we’ll be able to see how strategies and trends are playing out in what’s sure to be an exciting 2017.
