As cost of living rises across most of the country, the number of affordable major cities is declining. Wage&a;nbsp;increases haven&s;t kept apace with living expenses, further aggravating this trend. According to the &l;a href=&q;https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;Census Bureau&l;/a&g;, the median household income in the US is $57,617. Unfortunately, &l;span&g;Americans spend an average of $57,311 per year, according to the annual&a;nbsp;&l;a href=&q;https://www.bls.gov/opub/reports/consumer-expenditures/2016/home.htm&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;Consumer Expenditure Survey&l;/a&g;.&a;nbsp;That leaves very little left over if you&a;rsquo;re earning the median income. &l;/span&g;

&l;span&g;On top of that, expenditures in major cities tend to be higher than average expenditures on a national level. In the vast majority of American cities, the median income is not nearly enough to cover costs,&a;nbsp;&l;a href=&q;https://www.gobankingrates.com/saving-money/cities-where-cost-of-living-will-soar/&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;making the cost of living squeeze even worse&l;/a&g;.&a;nbsp;&l;/span&g;

&l;/ul&g;&l;h2&g;Cities With Low Cost of Living and Low Crime&l;/h2&g;

&l;span style=&q;font-family: &s;Georgia&s;,&s;serif&s;;color: #333333&q;&g;For many of the cheapest&a;nbsp;cities in the US, crime rates are rampant. According to&a;nbsp;&l;a href=&q;https://www.neighborhoodscout.com&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;NeighborhoodScout&l;/a&g;,&a;nbsp;property crime rates run alarmingly high in many of them, with Memphis, Tucson and Albuquerque reporting between 57 and 70 instances per 1,000 residents. Violent crime&a;nbsp;too is pervasive, with&a;nbsp;Detroit reporting 20 crimes per 1,000 residents, one of the highest rates.&l;/span&g;

&l;span style=&q;font-family: &s;Georgia&s;,&s;serif&s;;color: #333333&q;&g;There are some diamonds in the rough, however, that&a;nbsp;keep living costs down as well as crime rates: Las Vegas and&a;nbsp;&l;a href=&q;https://www.gobankingrates.com/making-money/cost-to-live-comfortably-biggest-cities-us/#2&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;El Paso&l;/a&g;. &l;span&g;&a;nbsp;Out of the 13 cities,&a;nbsp;&l;/span&g;only these&a;nbsp;two have been able to&a;nbsp;keep&a;nbsp;property crime&a;nbsp;down to less than 30 instances per 1,000 residents, reporting 29.78 and 18.77 crimes, respectively. With crime rates so low, the question then becomes, how long will affordable living last in these cities? Likely not long.&l;/span&g;
