Welcome to The Salary Chronicles, where we’re bringing transparency to negotiation and salaries, one story at a time. We ask women to share their experiences negotiating their salary and what their advice is for others doing the same. We share these stories anonymously so they feel comfortable speaking as openly and as freely as possible.
This week we’re speaking with a woman prioritized the benefit of telecommuting so much, she almost undervalued herself in her job search.
Title: Director of Product Strategy
Original salary: $103K
New salary: $118K + 15% bonus
What was the situation?
I had been working at a company for a couple of years, and while I really enjoyed it, the commute was brutal. I commuted 3 hours each day and that left me with a really limited amount of time to spend with my kids. I was a strong employee so the company let me experiment with working from h ome, but I knew it wasn’t a long term solution. I felt disconnected from my co-workers in the office and had trouble actively participating in meetings when I called in. I knew that if I wanted to make my telecommuting permanent while not impeding my career progression, I needed to find a company that had a virtual workforce, rather than try to be effective as the one employee who worked from home.
Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Own Right Now: Ford Motor Company(F)

Ironically, one of the biggest catalysts for Tesla stock has been Elon Musk’s nomination to President Donald Trump’s business advisory board. According to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas, “Elon Musk has an important line of communication to Donald Trump,” which is a big development for the company. Just after the election, one of the biggest fears for Tesla stockholders was that theTrump administration would roll back environmental regulations and encourage coal and oil production. However, a couple of weeks after the elections, the narrative completely changed with Tesla emerging as the poster boy of “US manufacturing”, one of the main focuses of the current administration. Unlike its rivals such as Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM) Tesla makes almost all of its cars and solar energy products inside the US. According to Bloomberg, the company is likely to be the biggest gainer if the border tax is imposed.

The UAW (United Auto Workers Union) has stated recently that it will work with the president-elect Donald Trump to renegotiate NAFTA. Trump’s economic plan put in a nutshell means companies like Ford (NYSE:F) which currently undertake practically all of its manufacturing for its light vehicles in Mexico could be in trouble. Here’s My take on Ford under Trump administration.

Compare Tesla’s US story with the likes of Ford (NYSE:F)which mass produces its smaller cars in Mexico to avail of cheaper labor. Trump has already stated that he will slap an import tax on US manufacturers when they bring their cars back to the US for resale. If Trump is true to his word and this indeed takes place, this has to be good for the likes of Tesla. Remember, Tesla will have strong competition in EV’s from the likes of General Motors (NYSE:GM)and Ford in the next few years. So any edge Tesla can gain over its competitors will be grabbed with both hands.

Where we are concerned: 1. Ex-Joint Strike Fighter portfolio is average. There are few major growth differentiators after F-35; and actually headwinds in Aeronautics specifically, including C-5 and F-16. 2. Consensus EPS and cash flow estimate headwinds. The final Leidos Holdings (LDOS)-Lockheed Martin numbers are likely dilutive to 2016, so guidance will come down. The $1.5bn 2018 cash pension contribution means lower 2018 free cash and a weaker 5-year cash trajectory than peers. 3. Valuation tough. Lockheed Martin trades at 24X CY17E P/E ex pension. While we shy away from valuation concerns at the trough of the Defense cycle, this is more expensive than other Defense stocks.
