Top 10 Dividend Companies For 2014

[ August 26, 2013 | Author: Admin | Weather: | Mood: normal]

Over the next few weeks I’ll be taking an in-depth look at each one of the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) nine dividend aristocrats. What makes for an aristocrat, which Dow components are a part of this elite group, and why so investors need to know about these stocks? Let’s take a closer look.

What does it mean to be a dividend aristocrat?
A dividend aristocrat is a company that has for at least 25 years consecutively not only paid a dividend but also increased it once or more a year during that period. Over the past quarter-century, the U.S. has been in a number of recessions, economic downturns, and years of slow growth, but these companies managed to continue not only making money, but also giving capital back to their shareholders.

When the U.S. or even world economies are firing on all cylinders, it’s easy for companies to come in and increase their dividend one or two years in a row, but to do it for at least 25 years straight — and as you’ll soon see, most have done it much longer than that — takes a certain type of management team and company philosophy to keep the business in a financial position where it can continue increasing its payouts.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Richard Band]

The mantra here is “free cash flow.” In recent years, Telkom Indonesia (NYSE: TLK), the dominant provider of both fixed-line and wireless communications in sprawling Indonesia, has poured huge sums into upgrading its networks. Now the company has the luxury of throttling back a bit.

Starting in 2011, each sales dollar (rupiah, actually) will generate more profit — along with a surge of cash that can be distributed to shareholders. I predict, in fact, that Indonesia’s largest telco will boost its dividend more than 30% by 2013 (from a 2010 base). That’s the kind of growth you want in retirement! Current yield, based on my estimate of 2011 dividends, is 4.8%. Buy TLK up to $36.

  • [By Robert Holmes]

Analyst Navin Killa is looking to Indonesia for opportunity with the pick of PT Telekom.

"An improving pricing environment will lead to stock price recovery, we believe," Killa says. "Telkomsel is regaining market share. Historically, as Telkomsel has reduced the pricing gap with its peers, the incumbent has increased its market share."

Killa’s base target for PT Telekom calls for a 36% jump over the next 12 months after the stock fell 8% this year. However, Killa’s most bullish call would see shares rise 56%, while the bearish scenario would see only a 9% increase in share price over the next year.

The chart below shows the American Depositary Receipts of PT Telekom trading in the U.S., although Morgan Stanley recommends buying shares trading on overseas exchanges.

The common stock currently trades at a price to earnings ratio of 10.5, below the industry average of 14.8 and historical average of 14. Price to book ratio is 2.02 with price to cash flow being 7.3.

Seadrill Limited was founded in 1972 and is based in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Bryan Perry]

SeaDrill Ltd. (NYSE: SDRL) is a unique opportunity for income investors seeking a pure play on deep-water drilling outside the post-BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The company was formed in 2005, and owns the most state-of-the-art drilling equipment in the entire industry that commands premium day rates. It is in big demand with utilization rates running near100% as big oil deposits become harder to find without going deep.

These guys operate all over the world in 15 countries on four continents, owning 54 rigs with exposure to only one rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Most of their drilling activity is off the coast of Norway and South Asia, so it has no exposure to the now unstable Middle East. However, news of ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia upping drilling production is hugely positive news for the oil and gas drilling sector. It confirms the belief that the worldwide drilling rig count will rise as well as day rates for the balance of 2011.

Shares of SeaDrill stand to trade significantly higher than its current price of $36.50, while paying a dividend yield of 7.5%. Buy SDRL under $40.

Alliance Resource Management GP, LLC serves as the general partner of Alliance Resource Partners, L.P. The company was founded in 1971 and is based in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Bill]

Coal is also an attractive investment to protect investors against runaway inflation. Industrial use of coal is particularly quite high. Flexible electricity producers switch between coal and other energy sources and this causes a high correlation in prices. The price of coal also collapsed from $200 per ton to $60 per ton during the financial crisis. The current level of $120 is 40% lower than its peak price. ARLP is a very profitable company, and it will benefit from the rise in coal prices. Current P/E ratio of 10 and dividend yield of 5% suggests ARLP is a very good buy.

  • [By Holly LaFon] Alliance Resources Partners is a coal producer and marketer primarily in the eastern U.S. Its ROA has been increasing since 2008 and increased to 22.5% in 2011 from 21.4% in 2010. The average return on assets for the oil, gas & consumable fuels industry in the trailing 12 months is 24.47%.

In 2011, its total assets increased to $1.7 billion from $1.1 billion in 2010. Its net income increased to $389 million from $321 million.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

You can’t build a dividend portfolio without looking at utility stocks—which brings us to PPL.

PPL is a utility stock that owns 11,200 megawatts of generation capacity, and provides regulated utility service to electricity customers in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee and the UK. PPL also distributes natural gas to Kentucky. Just a few years ago PPL was primarily a generation firm, earning three-fourths of its profits by selling power on the open market. Today, though, the firm has shifted its strategy towards the stable income of the regulated utility business.

Stable, predictable income is the hallmark of a stellar dividend stock, and PPL has managed to pick up its regulated exposure while still keeping its uniqueness. A big differentiator for PPL is its energy distribution unit in the UK—that expertise in a foreign market should open the door to other overseas utility operations if attractive opportunities present themselves down the road.

Dividend growth at PPL is likely to cool in the next couple of years as the firm dumps considerable CapEx into upgrading its infrastructure. That’s actually a good thing for dividend investors because it means that PPL’s dividend prospects are going to be artificially held down in the near-term. With the firm’s payout already at 4.87 percent, investors shouldn’t have any trouble waiting a while for the next hike.

  • [By Michael Brush]

PPL (PPL) has a dividend yield of 5%.

Utilities are the classic dividend play from your grandparents’ day. They’re still a good place to get yield.

Wright says he favors PPL in part because the provider of electricity to customers in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee is out of favor with investors. "Your risk/reward is not going to get much better than it is now."

Electricity demand should increase as the economy picks up. And much of the revenue from increased sales will fall to the company’s bottom line, because PPL generates power from lower-cost energy sources, particularly nuclear and coal.
