Walgreen Co. (WAG) plans to release its fourth quarter financial results on Tuesday, October 1, 2013. At approximately 8:30 am EST, Walgreen’s management will host a conference call to review results. Wall Street anticipates that WAG will earn $0.72 for the quarter. iStock expects the Drug Stores chain to miss Wall Street’s consensus number. The iEstimate is $0.71, a penny less than expected. Deerfield, Illinois based Walgreen Co., together with its subsidiaries, operates a network of drugstores in the United States. It provides consumer goods and services, pharmacy, and health and wellness services through drugstores, as well as through mail, and by telephone and online. The leading drug store has struggled to hit the street’s consensus mark as of late, missing the target three of the last four quarters. After announcing earnings this morning, Regions Financial’s (NYSE: RF  ) shot up as much as 4.5%. One factor alone was not responsible for today’s early gain: Many positive items can be found in the bank’s first quarter. Here are a few highlights. Exceeding expectations Analysts were expecting the bank to post $0.20 earnings per share on $1.3 billion in revenue. The bank exceeded the earnings estimate, checking in at $0.23 per share , and met revenue expectations, though revenue was down from the fourth quarter. Despite this decline in revenue, Regions managed to increase net income, both year over year and quarter over quarter. The bank’s $327 million in net income was a 25.3% increase from the fourth quarter, and a 125.5% increase from the first quarter last year. I have adapted many of the findings of James P. O’Shaughnessy’s book,What Works on Wall Street: A Guide to the Best-Performing Investment Strategies of All Time to my own investments. One of these strategies includes, at the end of each calendar year, using screens derived from the two best performing strategies in O’Shaughnessy’s book to find potential value and growth opportunities for the year ahead. For those who have not read What Works on Wall Street: A Guide to the Best-Performing Investment Strategies of All Time, O’Shaughnessy used a systematic, fundamental approach, compiling 45 years of S&P Compustat market data to research the performance of many different long term investment strategies. As expected, he concluded that some produced significantly greater returns than the S&P 500 while others produced less.
