stock market returns

Last week, women’s clothing retailer The Limited announced it was closing down all of its stores. It’s yet another casualty in the war on shopping malls and highlights the further transition of clothing retail to “fast fashion” and online formatting. It has been an ominous year for brick-and-mortar stores, but another one down could be good news for the survivors.

Traditional retail casualties

L Brands (NYSE:LB), owner of brands likeVictoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, spun off its last stake in The Limited to private equity company Sun Capital in 2010. Once a thriving fixture of the shopping mall experience, the beleaguered company is throwing in the towel and is now in process of closing down its remaining 250 locations.

Sun Capital said it will be taking a loss on the remaining equity has in the business, but said in a statement to shareholders it still made money on the purchase through dividend distributions taken since the first stake was taken in 2007.

I’ve said before that if I could only own one stock, it would have to be Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B).

Just a couple weeks ago, 13F filings started flowing in, and Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) ownership disclosures showed that Warren Buffett nearly quadrupled his Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) position in the fourth quarter. The Oracle of Omaha closed out 2016 with approximately 57.4 million shares, up from the 15.2 million shares that Berkshire Hathaway was holding at the end of the third quarter.

My take: With none other than Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) also investing in airlines and singing their praises as of late, Gerstner stuck the landing with his United pitch. There’s a definite case to be made that industry conditions have changed for the better, much like they did for the railroads starting more than a decade ago. United may not be the best of the bunch, but you’d do well to take a very close look at the industry. If Gerstner is right, there are multi-bagger opportunities looking down at you from up above.

Warren Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B), in addition to its dozens of businesses, also owns a portfolio of 47 different common stocks, many of which were hand-selected by Buffett himself. And, many of these stocks pay dividends. In fact, from all of the stocks in Berkshire’s portfolio, the company is generating more than $6,700 in dividend income every minute.

stock market returns: Allison Transmission Holdings, Inc.(ALSN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

With a neutral sector rating, we are working on evaluating risks to negative calls, and identifying potential value opportunities. Last week we noted more work might be worthwhile on Wabco Holdings (WBC), Terex, Manitowoc (MTW), and Caterpillar, two of those names have rallied for other reasons but the attractive price made the upside/downside skew up. We remain positive (OW) on Allison Transmission Holdings (ALSN) & United Rentals. Our and consensus 2017Allison Transmission Holdings estimates have fallen by 2% vs. ~15% for the group, while the shares are down 10% since launch. We continue to see United Rentals as the best value in our group…
