Is China the New U.S. for Tech?

A number of U.S. companies have benefited from China, but there’s also been some major companies that haven’t participated in China’s growth over the years too. Companies that first come to mind include Netflix (NFLX), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), among others, (although it should be mentioned Netflix is banned).

However, that could be changing.

Facebook is said to be working on a software that could “allow certain third parties the capacity to control visibility and monitor stories and topics.”

So does this mean that Facebook is headed to China? It’s not necessarily a guarantee, but it’s clear the company is trying to. With a nation of 1.3 billion people, lots of mobile users and an appetite for commerce, China is an ideal market.

But its government doesn’t make life as a tech company quite so easy. The question of ‘Should Facebook enter China?’ isn’t so black and white, unfortunately. Because the country is loaded with potential, companies like Facebook or Google would crush it from a financial standpoint in the giant nation. Or so it’s assumed.

Not your father’s biotech company. Having spun out of Abbott Laboratories (ABT) in 2013, and based in North Chicago, IL, AbbVie comes with a decidedly different pedigree than most biotechs. Indeed, most investors we speak with tend to lump the company in with large pharma – simply by virtue of this legacy. However, with a growth profile, product offering, and pipeline that is every bit that of a biotech company, we think this name should increasingly be viewed through such a lens…
