A Gathering Storm of Political Risk.

The fourth quarter is shaping up as a veritable cauldron of political risk over much of the world.

Over the weekend, China Daily, China’s official Communist Party house organ, reportedly said that the United States and South Korea would “pay the price” for deploying an advanced ballistic missile system to protect the free portion of the peninsula from Kim Jong-un’s increasingly erratic missile testing to the north.

In the Philippines, President Duterte is making it apparent that he is unlikely to further accommodate his nation’s more than century-old alliance with the United States. Duterte has asserted that the US-Filipino joint military exercises that just commenced will be the last of his remaining six-year term in office. He has also spoken favorably of the Chinese and Russians who, he says, were supportive of his angry rebuttal of what Duterte viewed as President Obama’s in terference in the Philippines’s Drug War.
