Springtime — or the second calendar quarter of the year — generally isn’t a great one for the broad market. While the S&P 500 tends to do well during the first three months of the year, it hits a headwind in the second three. Not so for small-cap stocks.

The S&P 600 Small Cap Index, which measures the performance of companies with market capitalizations between $300 million and $2 billion, may start the year slow, but really shines in the spring. On average, the S&P 600 advances 4% between the end of March and the end of June. It’s not a lot, but bear in mind there were some tough years in there dragging down the average.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. (NYSE: VRX) has been in the spotlight for a couple years and is now fighting to stay alive. The company initially brought in new executives and tried new initiatives to turn around the company but shares still have dropped. In its most recent attempt, Valeant announced that it intends to refinance some of its debt. One key analyst thinks that this might be a sign to abandon ship.

Bond prices were much lower early in the day, with yields up by nearly 10 basis points. But fixed income has rallied back (reducing the drop by half on the day). Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) , more weakness. Large pharma lower, led by Eli Lilly (LLY) . Shares of specialty pharma company Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc(NYSE:VRX)have tanked more than 20% in last two trading sessions, breaching the support from the 50 day SMA, after the Laval,Quebec-based company reported its Q4 and FY 2016 earnings on Tuesday, before the market opened. While the earnings itself were better than expected, the guidance for FY 2017 didn’t go down well with investors and wall street, earning the company multiple price target cuts. Valeant reported an adjusted profit of $1.26 a share against analysts’ estimateof $1.21. This was Valeant’s first beat in a long time. Even on the revenue front, the company reported better than expected results. Initially, the stock gained on the report of an earnings beat. However, once the guidance figures came in, the stock tanked. In our earnings preview of Valeant, we had said that the adjusted EBITDA guidance for 2017 will be the key driver of VRX stock after the earnings.

best stocks to buy in: Nam Tai Electronics Inc.(NTE)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Nam Tai Electronics (NTE), which is an electronics manufacturing and design services provider to a select group of the world’s leading OEMs of telecommunications and consumer electronic products. This stock has been destroyed by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 41%.

If you look at the chart for Nam Tai Electronics, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $6.05 to its recent high of $8.38 a share. During that uptrend, shares of NTE have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of NTE within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NTE if it manages to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.38 to $8.79 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 647,483 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then NTE will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from April that started near $11.50 a share. If this stock gets into that gap with volume, then the upside is tremendous and we could easily see NTE hit $11 to $12 a share.

Traders can look to buy NTE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $7.42 a share, or below more key support at $7.22 a share. One can also buy NTE off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Following 1) the recent sale of its Private Brands segment, 2) the announcement of the spin-off of Lamb Weston, 3) commentary around improving its margin structure in the Consumer segment, and 4) management’s recognition that the company has not raised its dividend in years, we think CAG is heading in the right direction. For income-oriented investors, note that CAG has a great deal of cash coming in from the Private Brands sale, and that management has stated its commitment to a strong dividend. As noted above, CAG is our best idea heading into new year.

Looking at where the stock is today compared to one year ago, we find that it is not only higher, but it has also clearly outperformed the rise in the S&P 500 over the same period. Although other factors naturally played a role, the company’s strong earnings growth was key. Looking ahead, our view is that this company’s fundamentals will not have much impact in either direction, allowing the stock to generally move up or down based on the push and pull of the broad market.
