10 Best Promising Stocks To Watch For 2014
Spotting bubbles is hard but not impossible.
Take a look at this chart of the Nikkei (NIKKEIINDICES: ^NI225 ) , the principal stock index in Japan. As you can see, it shot up by more than 80% in a period of only six months.
It should go without saying that corporate fundamentals had little to do with this trend; it was instead the result of politics. In the middle of last December, Shinzo Abe, president of the Liberal Democratic Party, secured a landslide victory to become Prime Minster. He did so by promising to get the country’s economy up and running for the first time since its own massive housing bubble burst in the early 1990s.
Since the election, the Japanese government has set out to make good on Abe’s promise. Among other things, its central bank has committed itself to achieving a 2% rate of inflation, driving down the exchange rate of the yen, and implementing a radical program of quantitative easing. But one of the side effects of these policies has been to dramatically inflate the value of equities.

- [By David Sterman]
Market Value: $4.76 billion
Fall from 52-week high: 26%
The Brazilian maker of regional jets for global airlines and armed services has long toiled in the shadow of industry leaders Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Airbus. This shadow has proved a nice place to be. Embraer has steadily built a head of steam behind those two titans, morphing into one of Brazil’s largest employers. Sales hit $2 billion for the first time in 2000, broke the $3 billion mark in 2004, the $5 billion mark in 2007 and could hit $6.5 billion by next year.
Embraer doesn’t go head-to-head with Boeing and Airbus on large wide-body planes. Instead, a tight focus on smaller, single-aisle planes has helped carve out a strong role with airlines looking to serve short-haul routes. JetBlue (Nasdaq: JBLU) has been adding Embraer jets to its fleet to handle smaller markets where the tried-and true Airbus 320 is just too large.
This stock isn’t just a play on Brazil, North America and Europe. At a recent ai show, Embraer landed new contracts to deliver planes to Kenya, Indonesia and Kazakhstan. The aircraft maker is well on its way to becoming a household name on every continent. Embraer’s backlog of planes yet to be delivered stands at 1,003 as of the end of June. The recent steady drop in Embraer’s stock has pushed it down to just 10 times projected 2012 profits.

GeoEye Inc. (NASDAQ: GEOY): GeoEye is a leading provider of global space-based and aerial imagery and geospatial information.
GeoEye’s imagery is used in a broad array of applications that include: government monitoring and surveillance, intelligence gathering, construction planning, scientific research such as environmental monitoring, and the online mapping industry via Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and other partners.
GeoEye is my highest pick right now, and the first place where you should put new capital to work.
Now that GeoEye’s latest satellite, GeoEye-1 has successfully launched and is producing usable imagery, the only thing holding back this stock will be the final approval of that imagery from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) which should arrive within 30 days.
Once GeoEye starts generating revenue from this new s atellite, GeoEye’s year-over-year comparisons will make the stock look ridiculously cheap, which it is.
Now that GeoEye-1 is launched and all but up-and-running, GeoEye is the best company in the commercial imagery space when compared to its rival DigitalGlobe (NYSE: DGI).
If you’ve got new money to invest, GeoEye is my #1 recommendation.
